It's not something that organisations have to do very often, but when it's time to choose and implement a new database you need to have a robust plan in place for your project!

Datawise London have created a great How-To-Guide that clearly sets out seven steps to take to choose a database for your organisation.

You won't get a definitive answer about 'the best database to buy' - around 50% of the work of implementing a database has to happen before you consider which database you should choose.

What this guide does is step you through a process to clarify what you want a database to do and how it will fit with your current ways of working.

The seven stages are:

    1. Scope - Taking stock - what have we currently got?
    2. Plan - how are we going to approach it?
    3. Specify - what do we need the database to do?
    4. Select - which database should we choose?
    5. Prepare - get everything ready
    6. Test and train - put it to the test
    7. Implement - use it everyday

Each of the stages has practical templates to help you through the process.
