Co-Governance, what it is and what it isn't

Created: June 26, 2025 at 3:41 PM | Updated: June 26, 2025 | By NZ Navigator Trust

Co-governance refers to an equality model of decision-making. It gives practical effect to the Te Tiriti o Waitangi undertakings of good governance, honourable partnership and protection and respect for Tino Rangatiratanga of iwi, hapū.

From a community organisation perspective, a growing number of organisations seek to have governance structures that reflect their commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

These approaches usually involve shared decision-making power for tangata whenua (Māori) and tangata Tiriti (non-Māori), and focus on constitutional, governance, and operational levels of the organisation.

The team at Maurea have shared this webinar that explores the concept of co-governance - what it is, and what it isn't - in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The webinar features Associate Professor Khylee Quince (Dean at AUT, School of Law), and Alex Rogers, (Chief Executive of the Hauraki Gulf Forum).
