GRANTED.govt.nz provides information to help you find and apply for pokie grant funding from grant making societies in Aotearoa New Zealand, along with an interactive tool that lets you explore the data in detail!

This Department of Internal Affairs | Te Tari Taiwhenua website aims to make it easier for organisations and communities to find and apply for funding from pokie grants.

Where does the funding come from?

Electronic gaming machines, or “pokies”, can be found around your town or suburb, in places like pubs, bars, hotels and even TAB outlets.

These machines are owned by Gaming Trusts (societies licensed and regulated by Te Tari Taiwhenua Internal Affairs to operate this kind of gambling activity).

The Gambling Act 2003 requires societies who operate pokie machines to distribute a minimum of 40% of profits from them back to the community. They do this by making grants to community organisations and charities.

As well as information about applying for grants, there is a map that you can use to find societies in your area.

Things to know before you apply:

  • Grants are made for future projects or activities
  • There is no restriction on the size of your group or organisation but you will need to be:
    • a registered charity
    • an incorporated society or a
    • registered non-profit organisation
  • Pokie grant funding cannot benefit commercial activities or result in personal gain for an individual - you need to show how the project or activity you are applying for will add value for your community.
  • Make your application to the right society for your project or activity - visit their websites to check or get in touch with the society directly if you need more information.

GRANTED.govt.nz also has an interactive tool that includes an overview of Pokie Grants in Aotearoa New Zealand:

  • how much funding is granted to community (by year or over time)?
  • how many organisations are funded?
  • how many grants have been accepted?
  • how many Grant Making Societies have been involved?

You can also use the interactive tool to explore Pokie data by District and Society:

  • does your community benefit from pokie grants?
  • what organisations have received pokie grants (by year or over time)?
  • what category of organisations have received funding (sport, community, arts etc) from which grant funding societies?
Other funding opportunities:
