Best practice guidelines - things to consider before you start
- If you need translations done at work, there are a few things to keep in mind.
- Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori doesn’t provide translation services to the public, but they do certify translators and interpreters.
- Keep in mind that not all Māori speakers are trained translators - it’s a specialised skill that requires practice.
- Make sure you plan ahead and reach out to a translator early. The time and cost will depend on the size and complexity of your translation, so you’ll need to discuss that directly with the translator.
- For public services, it's really important to have high-quality translations, so using a certified translator is recommended.
You can search for a translator or interpreter by name, region, service and level of expertise. The full register is also downloadable.
