The Project Budget is a tool for estimating the cost of a project. It helps managers and funders decide whether the project is worth doing by comparing the costs to the benefits.

What's in a typical budget?

A project budget lists all the costs expected before the project finishes. It also lets your organisation check if the project is staying within its budget as it progresses. It includes two parts:

  • Money In (income): This includes things like grants, donations, sponsorship, fees, and ticket sales.
  • Money Out (expenditure): This covers staff pay, buying materials, fees, food, and other costs like travel, training, or design.

How to organise your budget

You can group expenses by the activities they're for. For example, you can group costs for meetings under one category (like room hire and workshop expenses) and costs for research under another (like paying someone to review literature or write a report).
